In this update we’ll combine Day 3 and 4, as there’s nothing hugely exciting, but we did stop at a neat place along the road.
Day 3
Decided to come back to Bangkok after going to Erawan Falls, and grab a couple things, do a bit more research, and get a massage. After the hike, my back was really stiff, and my legs were hurting a bit. I knew I could get a good massage nearby, and the certainty of a quality massage was necessary today. I probably slept through half the two-hour massage too.
Crystal slept in, and I was up at my usual time. Not really much to report for today. I did do some writing though, as well as downloading and evaluating some of my photos.
We decided to stay one more night, refine our trip and leave early the next morning.
Day 4
We got out at a decent time and decided today was a big driving day. There wasn’t a lot we wanted to see between Bangkok and Sukhothai, so we thought we would focus on driving.
We stopped in Nakhon Sawan for lunch, and a shop along the side of the road that we knew about near Kamphaeng Phet. They make a dessert sort of like a cross between puffed wheat squares and Rice Krispie squares. They incorporate things like pandan leaf, sesame, puffed rice and, I believe, caramelized sugar.
They were really nice there and gave us samples to try and we picked up four packages. We finished one bag on the way.
With stops it was at least a seven hour drive. Thai driving is never a sedate exercise, with most drivers being somewhat reasonable. Then you get the idiots, and there seems to be a many of them, with plenty of money to buy nice cars they’re barely able to control.
Once we reached Sukhothai, I needed a nap. We checked into our hotel and, after 1.5 hours, we were ready to go and eat.
We were close to a restaurant row, but a little late for a few places at half past seven. It seems that during better times, this was the place to go. It seems to be opening up again, without what seemed like half the places open.
Unfortunately, for me, we picked a place that has a menu style that just doesn’t work for me. The all-Thai (no English and no photos) menu didn’t help, with sparse descriptions and Google Translate not helping the matter.
Remember the good old days when you could eat anything with no consequence? No? I do! These days I do have to watch what I eat. Spicy food, lately, does a real number on my stomach so I tend to avoid eating too much of it. I can handle some.
The restaurant was mostly seafood and, honestly, I am not always keen on how seafood dishes are prepared here. Granted, I haven’t tried them all, and I really ought to find a seafood expert who can give good suggestions.
Crystal picked out a few things, and I had some chicken wings. The dish included the two bone wings, and wing tips. I don’t eat the wing tips, so that wasn’t going to be enough. Yes, I was fussy today. The restaurant didn’t even do some standard dishes like green curry, pad Thai, or chicken fried rice (my fallback when nothing catches my taste buds).
So, after we finished, we moved on and found another restaurant with something more to my liking.
