Bangkok Thailand to Vientiane Laos by Train

2024-08-14 by Traveller Leave a Comment

Second class car on train from Bangkok, Thailand to Vientiane, LaosTravel plans have changed a lot recently. I decided I didn’t want to do a road trip to the south of Thailand, and instead have decided on two different trips.

I just boarded the train to Vientiane, Laos, at Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station (Bang Sue Grand Station). Will be in Laos for six days. I wanted better seats, so that added a couple extra days because I wanted a window seat. It won’t do me any good anyway because it’s dark out, but I have something to lean against. It’s a popular train and the sleeping berths are sold out.

I knew the air conditioning would be cool but wow, it is like an icebox in here. Glad I brought a long sleeve shirt to put on as well. I should have brought socks, shoes, pants and a coat too. On our rail trip to Chiang Mai a while back we had sleeping berths which weren’t nearly as cold as this. I am right under an AC unit, so a toque and gloves might have been good too!

The car I am on is second class, and a bit tired. It’s okay for comfort and for short trips it would be fine. For longer stretches, it’s not ideal. My trip is about 12 hours.

On the other hand, I am paying 574 Baht ($22.46 Cdn) to go from Bangkok to Vientiane, Laos. I can handle a bit of discomfort for that price!

A couple days after I get back we will head out to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It will be our second time there. Our first trip was not ideal, and we’ve wanted to go back ever since. This time the trip will be well-planned, as we will be there for 4 nights.

I already know I will head back to Laos at a later point. This isn’t a long trip, so I won’t have time to go to Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang.
