Today is Father’s Day in Thailand, and Crystal’s day off. We decided to go look at espresso makers in the northern part of Bangkok and ended up at Boon Tong Kee restaurant.
Our little espresso maker is okay, but as our knowledge has grown, so has our desire to get a better espresso maker. We’ve narrowed the field down, and will pick one up soon.
Making our way over to the Central Eastville mall for a late lunch, we ate at Boon Tong Kee. It’s billed as original Cantonese chicken rice from Singapore. I am a big fan of chicken rice, and this ended up being a delightful change of pace.
We ordered the chicken rice for two, which I ended up eating most of it. Not that Crystal doesn’t like it, but she had a dish of her own too. The portion was suitable for me, in any case.
It was quite different than the Hainanese chicken rice I normally look for: served cold, with a pour over of what looked like a soy-sauce type sauce. It had pickled vegetables on the side, and I ordered a bowl of chicken rice separately.
I was surprised it was cold, but it was excellent. The sweet pickled vegetables were great also, and we ordered an extra side of them. One of the dipping sauces was a hot sauce, and the other was mainly puréed ginger.
We had a side of deep-fried stuffed fritters and the dipping sauce was like a thin orange marmalade. Very tasty!
The stir-fried noodles with minced pork and black bean sauce were really good. I ate most of them. I have been staying away from noodles and rice to a large extent, but not today!
Crystal’s main dish was cold noodles with original chicken breast and soy sauce. It also had a large helping of pickled vegetables.
It was a large meal, and I may need a nap. We ended up at the nearby Casa Lapin Specialty Coffee, where I had an iced Americano and Crystal had a Tropical Soul coffee which was an iced coffee with passion fruit.
Central Eastville is one mall we have never been to, so we’ll probably spend a couple hours walking off this meal. May not even need to eat later!
