The Dragon Temple – Wat Sam Phran Thailand

2022-12-01 by globetrotter Leave a Comment

We recently had a chance to go see Wat Sam Phran, also known as the Dragon Temple.

It’s an unusual temple about a 45 minute drive from where we live and it wasn’t what we expected at all.

As you can see from the photos, the temple is a 17 storey tower with a snake-like dragon wrapped around the building with its head at the top.

What we did not expect was that to get to the top of the tower, you walk inside the dragon! It was an odd, but interesting experience. There wasn’t much to see going up, or down, except for signs along the way letting you know what level of heaven you were at.

It is quite a view from the top of the tower! It is worth the climb.

Frankly, I was surprised the walls inside the dragon were just plain concrete, but maybe they just haven’t got to the point of decorating them yet.

At the base of the tower there are some interesting features, statues, and paintings. We toured the rest of the grounds and found some interesting statues.

We couldn’t find an easy way to go into the temple with the large Buddha statue, so we decided to leave it for another time. I would like to come back with my drone, so we can see it then.

What was also unusual about this temple is that, if I remember correctly, we didn’t see any male monks, only women.

It’s definitely worth a visit, and the inside of the dragon does have fans to keep you cool. May not be the easiest walk for some people who have mobility issues, and the elevator seemed to be out of service.
