Wandering in Chiang Mai – Day 7 – Road Trip Thailand

2022-12-26 by globetrotter Leave a Comment

Wat Phan On, Chiang Mai
When you come to the Sunday Market near the Tha Phae Gate, you can stop and visit Wat Phan On as a break from your shopping.

This morning after a bit of a sleep in we started with a coffee at Cool Muang. We then moved on to Stories, a centrally located and favourite coffee shop of ours, for our second coffee of the day.

Once finished our coffees we made our way to The Happy Frog for lunch. We found this place on our last day in Chiang Mai the last time we were here and had already eaten. The Happy Frog is a Swiss deli, and the quality of the food met our satisfaction. We shared a Roasted Chicken Bacon and Tallegio Cheese sandwich (with salad, cucumber and tomato), topped with a fried egg, and 2 Fried Berlin meatballs, baked with cheese.

The meat and cheese were delicious and the baguette was perfect, which is a nice change of pace. We often find we aren’t fond of bread in Thailand, but this was different.

We both decided we were in need of a massage so decided that today was a good day for some pampering. I chose to get a massage at a spa that is run by former inmates. They provide massage training for former inmates and then provide them with a job. It was a really good massage. Once done my massage, I decided to go for a shampoo and blow dry. (How can you guess this isn’t Alain writing today?)

It was then time to check out the weekly Sunday market. It was busy when we were here at the end of February, but it was way busier today. You basically had to walk at the pace of the crowd, no faster, and stopping to look at anything meant someone would probably run into you.

While wandering the market we started getting hungry but nothing was looking appealing. We were wanting to go back to the Burmese restaurant we enjoyed last time but hadn’t had an opportunity yet. I checked their hours and they would be open for a while yet, so we joined the crowds going the other direction to make our way to the restaurant.

At The Swan Burmese Restaurant we ordered 5 dishes: 2 salads

  • Lar Pat Toke (green tea leaf salad with cabbage, nuts, tomatoes and garlic)
  • Chad Jam (rice salad with chicken, long beans, ginger, potatoes, onions, sour mango and nuts)

For our main dishes we ordered:

  • Hinlay Curry (curry with chicken, garlic, tomatoes, onions, ginger, potato and cumin)
  • Net Lung (deep fried pork meatballs with onions, potatoes, tomatoes, ginger and garlic)
  • Nga Bpao (stir-fried fish with Burmese sauce).

It was all really good, especially the salads. Alain’s favourite, again, was the green tea leaf salad, but agreed that everything was great!

After supper we walked back to the hotel and called our families to wish them a Merry Christmas.
