This past Friday, Crystal and I were out in Edmonton, and needed to find lunch. We made our way to Barb and Ernie’s, a favourite German restaurant of ours, and managed to get a seat before they closed. They have odd hours and are usually very busy, so we were happy to make it there.
It was mid-afternoon, and I hadn’t eaten at all that day. I ordered the German Sausage Combo, which included bratwurst, knackwurst, and weisswurst. It included a large helping of warm sauerkraut with bacon, and I chose the garlic mashed potatoes and gravy.
It also came with dill pickle soup, and a salad. I don’t know if you’ve ever had dill pickle soup, but it truly is amazing. Crystal accurately described it as borscht made from dill pickles. It’s a hearty, delicious soup that would be great with a rustic German pumpernickel bread. A nice addition would be some grass-fed butter from New Zealand. We get that in Thailand. Mmmm mmm!
The salad wasn’t a typical salad either. There was a sweet quinoa salad with raisins, and potato salad, as well as some spinach and sliced cucumber and tomatoes in dressing. The soup and salad alone would have been a decent size meal. The whole meal, combined, was a recipe to fall asleep at the wheel, but in a good way.
To accompany the sausages, they had homemade BBQ sauce, mustard, and curry ketchup. My favourite was the grainy mustard. It goes nicely with these sausages.
Crystal had a huge German bacon pancake, which I can say was delicious. Her meal wasn’t nearly as large as my meal, and she tried some of mine, and helped me finish off the sauerkraut. It was a lot of food.
The rest of the afternoon is a bit of a blur, but I managed to stay awake and we drove to Earl’s, where Crystal was meeting up with some friends from her previous job. I decided to take a nap in the vehicle, and slept off the German sleeping pill I had consumed earlier. I joined them about an hour later.
