Street food – Bangkok, Thailand

2022-07-07 by globetrotter Leave a Comment

It’s always nice when some of our favourite street food vendors are out.

Tonight I got crab fried rice, papaya salad (som tum), and skewers of chicken. All of it was delicious, as usual. There is always enough rice for two, so I have some leftovers for tomorrow.

The roti lady is still around. The roti are really good but I never get them. I usually have a couple pieces of it when Crystal gets it. They’re good, but too many carbs for me!

The bill for this feast? 155 baht, or $5.58 Cdn. Speaking of exchange rates, now is a great time to come to Thailand. The Baht is at its lowest rate in 5 years against the Canadian dollar.

For a quick rule of thumb we have always used an exchange rate of 100 baht = $4 Cdn. When we got here, the exchange was around $4.25/100 Baht (January 2021). Now? It’s $3.60/100 Baht!

It is crazy how much the Baht has dropped. Just for comparison, you can get a decent hotel room in many places in Thailand for 500 Baht. When we first got here that would have cost us $21.25 per night. Now it is $18 per night. Spend 30 nights here and that saves you $97.50! Saving almost $100 in a month of budget travel is a good deal, especially with the increase in prices of airline travel.

Speaking of airline travel, we have had very few issues going back and forth to western Canada recently, so if you’re looking for a good, budget holiday, this is still a good place to do it.

Plus, you can get a good one hour Thai massage for 250 Baht, or $9 Cdn. In Canada, that same hour will easily run you $90 or more.
