This past weekend I decided to head down to Sattahip, just south of Pattaya, to The Bikers Cafe for the British Bike Meet on Sunday. Triumph and Royal Enfield were showing off some bikes and letting people go for test rides.
I found out about it on short notice through my Line motorcycle riding group, but my bike needs updated registration and a working battery before I can take it out again.
It would have been nice to do a ride down there, but I decided to drive the car and go anyway. I had hoped to meet some people from my riding group, but no one was able to make it but me!
I drove down on the Saturday, found a nearby hotel, then headed to Saikeaw Beach to check it out, and get some food. It’s a bit odd getting there, as it seems to be located in some sort of naval base, and you need to leave a piece of ID to enter.
It ended up being well worth the minor hassle. It’s a beautiful beach that wasn’t crowded at all late on Saturday afternoon. I was there not long before sunset, and managed to get a quick bite to eat before it started.
It didn’t look like it would be a promising one, but my patience paid off! The colours were amazing, and the reflections off the water were great. Waiting for a good while after the sun drops below the horizon can really pay off.
I made my way back to the hotel for the night, and in the morning headed off to the bike meetup.
For breakfast I found a Thai restaurant specializing in Khao Soi. I had heard about it on Greeny’s Travels YouTube channel last year. I bookmarked it in Google Maps and found it was close to where I was staying, and I drove right by The Bikers Cafe on the way. I picked the right place to stay!
After my delicious breakfast, I headed over to the bike meetup. I had brought my riding gear, but wasn’t in the mood to ride. I checked out the Royal Enfields to see how they fit me, which was interesting. Some were really comfortable for me.
The Triumphs seemed to be the most popular for rides, and I didn’t sit on any of them. They were always gone.
I checked out the cafe, talked with Mike, a friendly German expat, for quite a while, met Martin, the owner of The Bikers Cafe, and then decided to indulge at the 250 Baht buffet. The food was excellent!
While I didn’t do any of the things I had originally intended, that was okay. I just needed to get away for a weekend, and do something different. It was great to chat with some expats for a while, and see some different parts of Thailand. I was really happy with my sunset photos, and want to go back again soon! There is nothing better than a west-facing beach at sunset!
Apparently there are regular events held here, so there is always an excuse to come down. It’s also a bit of motivation to get my bike back on the road!
