Exploring Surin – Day 9 – Thailand Road Trip

City Pillar Shrine, Surin
Surin City Pillar Shrine. According to Wikipedia, Lak mueang hold the city spirit deity, and are made from acacia wood.

Today is kind of a work day, so I decided on exploring Surin and staying one more night. I was up extra early because the guy at the property next door decided to use his stupid gas powered weedeater to clear his property at 6 a.m.

Time to get up I guess. I had planned on 8 a.m.

So I started doing some writing, pondering, getting sidetracked, route planning, and all of a sudden I hadn’t finished what I planned to finish this morning.

I have some wiggle room in my schedule, but less than I would have had without the drone debacle.

I am glad I decided to stay. There was another burger place to check out…. but it was closed. Hmm. I ended up finding a nice restaurant with AC and had pad krapao with pork and egg.

Along the way I checked out the Surin City Pillar Shrine, which was really interesting. Not a lot to see but the architecture and ornaments were a bit different than I have seen before.

From the sign: “Surin City Pillar Shrine It is considered to be a sacred location for all Surin inhabitants for a long time and revered by all. It was originally a shrine without a pillar yet but in 1968 The Fine Arts Department designed and reconstructed a new shrine. The Pillar itself is made from Java Cassia wood procured from Mr. Prasit Maneekan of Sai Yoke District, Kanchanaburi Province.”

Just across from the restaurant I ate at was another temple: Wat Klang Surin, or Phra That Chedi Si Muang Chang พระธาตุเจดีย์ศรีเมืองช้าง (วัดกลางสุรินทร์). It’s pretty spectacular but, judging from the dust and debris on the floor, it’s not often used beyond the first floor. I went right up to the top and the last spiral staircase. It was pretty cool up there and the views around the city were quite good! It was a beautiful day here!

Not sure what to do next I decided to head back to the hotel. None of this had been planned. Spontaneous adventure! Love it!

I saw a restaurant along the way that looked good, and they have stir fried vegetables on the menu. idn’t get quite as much to eat as I had hoped earlier, so I ordered crispy pork with kale, and another fried egg.

I wandered around Surin for a while longer, and ended up going for a massage. The masseuse worked on my shoulder for more than half of the two hours, and it feels way better now! I need to find someone who can help my lower back. That’s always a difficult one. It was interesting that after my shoulder felt better, the occasional dizziness I feel was gone.

Right after my massage I headed back to the hotel. Instead of going up to the room, I went across the street to Let’s Eat Surin again. I had black pepper chicken steak, and also ordered what translates as Lui Suan Noodles (ก๋วยเตี๋ยวลุยสวน). It’s like a Vietnamese salad roll, but with sweet pork, sausage, and Thai basil. Not sure what else. It came with a sweet chili dipping sauce that had a bit of a bite. It was really good! It’s the first time I remember eating it. I will definitely order this again!

It was nice to spend time exploring Surin, doing a bit of wandering, and not having to do any long distance driving. Off next to Ubon Ratchathani.
