Nan to Chiang Mai – Day 19 – Thailand Road Trip

Swallowtail butterfly Papilla Demoleus at roadside stop between Nan and Chiang Mai
I only had my cell phone handy to take photos of this butterfly at a roadside stop between Nan and Chiang Mai.

Today’s plan was to drive from Nan to Chiang Mai, but it was a bit of a slow start today because I had to do quite a bit of writing and having a look at all my photos from the previous day. There was a lot! On this trip I haven’t felt like I’ve had the luxury to stop anywhere for too long and relax for a while. I don’t just like to relax back in Bangkok. I like doing that in Chiang Mai (my destination for today) and Hua Hin.

Once I was ready to roll, I headed for breakfast at Hot Bread, my favourite breakfast location in Nan. After that, I was off. Getting a late start, I just knew I wouldn’t have much time to stop, which was okay. I forgot just how long the drive is from Nan to Chiang Mai. I like to go via Phayao. It’s a nice, curvy route, with a lot of interesting scenery. It’s even better on a motorcycle, and I did that on my first trip to Northern Thailand.

On this day there was a bit of construction, but not too much. I stopped a couple times to take photos at some nice scenic spots. The weather was good for my stops and I could see storms in the distance. No really crazy rain on this trip, fortunately. My route also took me through a couple of provinces I’ve been to before: Phayao and Lampang.

I saw something interesting along the way: a KFC food truck! First time ever. Didn’t know they existed! It’s a serious operation though!

I made it into Chiang Mai just as the sun was setting. I rested in the hotel for a while, and headed out to The Swan Burmese Cuisine, of course! It is one restaurant I have to go to at least once every time I visit Chiang Mai. I love the food here! I also thought about going to Je Hua Noodles, but it was too late for that. Shoutout to Wobbly Cat for showing me that restaurant last time I was here! I normally don’t go for soup in restaurants, but this one has some of the best soup I’ve ever had! Another mandatory place to go in Chiang Mai.

After supper, I decided I needed to walk it off. I only got two items from the salad menu, Lar Pat Toke and Alu Town, but they were generous servings!

I walked through the bar district in a big loop around, back to my car near The Swan, and tripled my steps for the day. Definitely needed that! Too much driving! For a Friday night it wasn’t particularly busy in the bar district. Slow season. Hopefully it picks up soon!

I figured out my phone issue too. My data allotment was gone; I’d used it all. I have a 50 gb plan! There must have been a day where I updated my iCloud and I was just on my phone plan and not wifi. Oops! I get basic service, but my podcasts load slow, and Google Maps doesn’t show me images quickly. Oh well. Just a few more days before the next billing cycle. I never use more than maybe 5 gb normally.
