Gravy Baby – Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia

2022-08-20 by globetrotter Leave a Comment

Kicking off our five-day holiday in Penang was a 6:30 a.m. flight. It wasn’t voluntary, believe me. Our original flight had been at 10:30 a.m. We did manage to get in bed early, but the alarm went off at a brutal 3 a.m. I didn’t want to drive to the airport so early, but at least there was almost no traffic.

The two-hour flight to Penang was fine and we both slept through most of it. We made it to the hotel far too early but they were nice enough to let us store our bags there.

The next thought was for breakfast and coffee. A short walk from our hotel we found Gravy Baby (yeah!).

Gravy Baby’s colonial-style building (typical of what you find in Georgetown in Penang) has been converted into a cool restaurant with a nice breeze running through it.

Because Crystal had a quad-shot mocha from Starbucks at the airport (at 5 a.m.), she had a passion fruit iced tea (delicious), while I had a long black coffee with steamed milk on the side.

For breakfast, Crystal had the Chili Dipping Eggs, and I had the Eggs Florentine. Both were excellent, and now I want to add Eggs Florentine to my breakfast repertoire.

So now we are just chilling in the restaurant for a while before venturing out.

We’ve been here before but our experience was much different. The last time we were here this was our first real venture into Southeast Asia. We were fighting a bit of jet lag, culture shock, as well as heat and humidity.

Now we comment about how much more sedate the traffic is than Bangkok and that they drive on the same side of the road. We’re definitely much more seasoned travellers than we were just a few short years ago!
