Hameediyah Restaurant – Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia

Hameediyah Restaurant is a popular place in Georgetown!

Our supper experience the first day was different! We ended up at Hameediyah Restaurant, an Indian Muslim restaurant we’d found when we searched for some of the top restaurants in Penang.

We walked up to Hameediyah Restaurant and there was a line up to get in.

What we didn’t realize is that you go in, get a plate of food and walk a couple doors down to find a seat.

Crystal sat at the table we found, and once we had been guided through the process, I went over and picked out our food.

The pressure was on! I had no idea what the dishes were that I had picked out.

I chose two plates of biryani ayam, and both were chicken. No pork in a Muslim restaurant! I know Crystal is not too fond of lamb or goat either, so chicken it is.

Both were very good, and some of the vegetables included potato and, I think, eggplant. There was also a salad made of cucumber and red onion. Each plate cost 18 Ringgit or $5.20 Cdn. Good deal for the amount of food!

Finding dessert in Georgetown

We wandered around for a while after that, and eventually found the Roots Dessert Cafe.

We both had very unusual desserts. Crystal’s was the most interesting. Mine was more traditional, but with an unusual ingredient.

Crystal’s was called Pisang Pengat and was described as banana semifreddo, brûlée banana, sago gula melaka, candied peanut.

Essentially it was a burnt sugar coating on the banana, coconut ice cream (it tasted like sweet whipped butter, and was amazing. I was tempted to steal it for myself!), tapioca with butterfly pea for colouring, and we weren’t sure if the sauce was maple syrup but very similar.

Wow! It was amazing!

Mine was a traditional crumble with a dollop of vanilla ice cream. The fruit in mine was cempedak. We discovered that it is very similar to jackfruit, and durian. It was really good, with the colour and initial flavour resembling peach, and the deeper flavours were unique.

My dessert was great, but I would switch out the vanilla for a couple dollops of that coconut ice cream!

The cost for Crystal’s dessert was 21 RM (ringgit) and mine was 23 RM ($6.09 and $6.67 Cdn)

It was a full day, and we ended it with full stomachs!

I’ve included a bunch of photos from our walk about. Georgetown is such a photogenic place!
